Central Illinois home to immigrant from Africa

I was born in the village of Pindi in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1967. When I opened my eyes, I was crying in the hands of an aunt singing to me. My mother could not nurse me until that evening because she had returned with father to the manioc and plantain fields. Pindi, like many DRC villages, was involved in many wars and rebellions. I was born just after my parents left the forest following the 1965 rebellion.
