Durbin: ‘Give immigrants a chance’

On Memorial Day, Illinois’ Senior U.S. Senator Dick Durbin came to Beardstown to listen to the voices of immigrants and to share his own views on the contentious issue of immigration reform.
“We need to give them (immigrants) a chance,” Durbin said following his Memorial Day appearance at an immigrants’ town hall-type meeting sponsored by the Faith Coalition for the Common Good. About 100 people attended the session held at Beardstown’s First Lutheran Church, including Beardstown Mayor Steve Patterson. They were welcomed by Sam Komla, president of Beardstown Immigrant Families United.
Durbin heard several West African and Hispanic immigrants tell their stories of struggle in search of a better life in America. They told of the difficulties in coming to America, the pain of leaving family behind and their ongoing struggles to build a new life in a new land.
